In the summer of 2014, Airport Elementary administration and counselors created a timeline to implement the learning of the 7 Habits of Happy Kids for the 2014-2015 school year. Our school parent specialist, Mrs. Barreiro, along with parent volunteers, created school banners and redesigned the main entrance bulletin boards to welcome students to a new school year. The goal was to create a learning environment where our students could begin to understand that success lies in being proactive, setting goals, and working to achieve them.

Our school counselors, Mrs. Olivares and Mrs. Woodard then planned for The Leader in Me Classes. Every month, students learned about the 7 Habits of Happy Kids and how they could implement the habits to lead more responsible and successful lives.

Airport staff attended a staff development session on The Leader in Me process and the 7 Habits of Happy Kids in August. Mrs. Hinojosa, our school librarian, shared resources with staff that they could use to teach the 7 Habits. The school year began with a buzz of excitement.... what were these 7 Habits? Teachers began to teach the 7 Habits and read stories from the book, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, and shortly afterwards, students began using the 7 Habits language daily, reminding each other to " Be proactive and do their work" and telling their teachers "We are synergizing with our group."

Airport staff participated in a book study of The Leader in Me which generated an awareness of the process of becoming a Leader in Me school. Staff began to see the potential in the success students could achieve at Airport by following these timeless principles.

In June of 2015, our school was awarded the I Am A Leader Foundation Grant to implement The Leader in Me at Airport. We are excited about this accomplishment and look forward to the wonderful impact this process will have on our students' overall success here at Airport Elementary.
